I had a BAD night. In the morning, I tried to get up for breakfast but only got as far as reception before my legs couldn’t hold me up any more. So I went back to bed - which is where I stayed for the rest of the day.
It was a shame - I’d had a brilliant chat with the receptionist the day before about all the sights in the area - from the Hill of Fourteen Colours (TWICE as good as Purmamarca’s Seven, surely!), to the salt flats, to the site of an ancient civilisation - even a great lunch stop. But none of it was to be, for me at least.
While I lay in bed under two duvets, with all my clothes on, and a woolly hat (and still felt cold), Kevin and Jemima headed off to the Las Salinas Grandes, the salt flats - I was really keen for them to see this.
The receptionist had said it was a beautiful drive through the mountains to get there, up to over 4000m, and she was not wrong - exactly the kind of road Kevin loves to drive (but not usually in a giant Chevrolet 4x4).
When they got there, it was very well set up for the main draw: creating fun photos using the weird perspective you could get from the sea of white - various guides, fully covered from the high altitude sun, we’re all ready to show you what to do. Jumping, posing like they’re in a maté cup, or being chased by a dinosaur - fabulous fun.
By the time they got back my temperature was back to normal, but I still couldn’t get out of bed. So we decided the delights of Humahuaca would have to wait for another day, and instead had a restful afternoon in our hotel room (actually a little house in the grounds of the hotel - very nice). I had a lovely view of gardens and mountains from my sick bed, and the afternoon gently meandered by - very pleasant after such a few busy days (although it would have been better without the stomach bug).
Then it was packing, returning the hire car, sorting out our morning departure, before a bar snacks dinner (I attempted half a ham toastie - a mistake…) and then an early night.
The alarm was set for 2.15am - we’ve got a bus to catch…
