He says he's not that bothered by birthdays, but actually always enjoys a fuss, so it was balloons in bed first thing this morning, followed by cards, presents (carefully stowed on the journey so far), chocolate cake with candles, and of course the happy birthday song (to which Jemima is a enthusiastic contributor). She is also very keen on cards and presents, but is gradually realising that they aren't all for her; and today managed to content herself with opening things on Kevin's behalf, rather than ripping through them wildly. Kevin seemed very happy with his presents - MMA books and DVDs, a shower gel to match his aftershave and a toast rack (you may scoff but he's wanted me to buy one for ages); but I think what he appreciated most was that I streamlined the garage contents while he was showering to make it easier to get the bikes out.
Then, as it was a beautiful day - sunny, warm, not so windy - and people were out on the beaches and on their bikes, we set off on a bike ride along the wonderfully broad, paved sea front, and through a wild bit of greenery (a parc naturel apparently) to the next door town, Empuriabrava, for another tapas lunch. Unfortunately the trip was slightly marred by the aftershocks of an earlier argument (for which I must claim majority responsibility) - sad, especially on a birthday; but true - this is real life, not a fairytale. But the clouds had cleared by the time we got back to the motorhome, after some on-bike 'discussions'. Family harmony restored, it was back to normal: Jemima had a nap; I did some shopping for the birthday dinner; and Kevin had a bike ride up to the castle at the mouth of the bay. Dinner was Kevin's favourite salads (at his request) plus some rather good Rioja, yet more cake, and another round of happy birthday singing.
He says he never remembers birthdays but I hope he will remember (the good bits) of this one.
